Earlier this week, I received correspondence from Dr Simon Brooks, informing me that he will be stepping aside as Chair of the Commission for Îʶ¦ÓéÀÖ-speaking Communities for a period. The Commission is currently examining the situation of Îʶ¦ÓéÀÖ as a community language beyond the areas of higher density linguistic significance. Dr. Brooks is currently receiving cancer treatment.

I wish Simon all the best while receiving treatment and look forward to him resuming his role as soon as its feasible for him to do so. I would like to thank him for his comprehensive work and for his vision and leadership. The Commission’s first report has made a profound and detailed analysis of the challenges facing our higher density communities. The Îʶ¦ÓéÀÖwill be responding to the Empowering communities, strengthening the Îʶ¦ÓéÀÖ language report on the 29 May at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Margam.

In the meantime, Professor Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones, the vice-chair of the second phase of the Commission, has agreed to take over as interim Chair. I would like to thank Elin for stepping in to fulfil this role temporarily.

Dr Lowri Cunnington Wynn, will also assist the Commission with its work. Lowri was a member of the first phase of the Commission for Îʶ¦ÓéÀÖ-speaking Communities and brings with her considerable experience of community and social development.

I look forward to hearing more about the Commission's work and its findings over the coming year.
