We want homes and businesses in Wales to be able to access fast and reliable digital connectivity. To find out more about what we are doing in Wales, read our Digital strategy for Wales.
Most homes and businesses across Wales have access to good quality digital connectivity. We have invested significant public funding to help achieve this through our roll-outs of fibre broadband technology.
Before looking at the options available for getting faster broadband use to find out if you already have access to a fast broadband service. You can also look at , which include a broadband availability checker and .
If fibre broadband is available, you need to upgrade to get faster speeds. Your current broadband won’t change unless you upgrade. Find out how to order a fibre broadband service.
There are multiple suppliers that have broadband networks in Wales. Check directly with broadband providers or through .
If fast broadband is not available at your property, there are other options for getting the broadband speeds you need.
Broadband technology solutions
Fibre is not the only answer to faster broadband speeds, new technologies are being developed to connect homes and businesses. If you cannot currently get a fast broadband service, you should consider all the solutions available, these include:
Satellite connection
A satellite transfers data to and from a dish attached to your property to bring you broadband. This provides superfast download speeds and should be available everywhere to even the most remote places.
Satellite internet has been around for some time. However, new technologies are now available such as Low Earth Orbit (LEO) or Next Generation Satellite that can provide speeds of over 100Mbps. Unlimited data packages are available.
Satellites need to be installed where they have an unobstructed view of the sky. Satellites can be self-installed or you can use a tv aerial or satellite installation company or local broadband provider to install it for you. Some satellite providers have authorised independent installers.
Some companies have already launched satellites and packages are available to premises in Wales. Satellite dishes for broadband services are now also available from some electronics retailers or department stores.
Mobile broadband
Properties may be able to access a faster broadband connection using the mobile 4G or 5G network.
This doesn’t mean using a mobile phone and you don’t need cables or a phone line. A mobile broadband connection is delivered to your property through a 4G or 5G router or a wi-fi dongle.
5G can offer the fastest speeds where it is available, 4G is more widely available. Both are options for those who cannot access a reliable fixed broadband connection. Speed can vary depending on signal strength, how far you are from a mobile mast and sometimes the number of other people using mobile broadband in your area.
You will need to check your chosen network for coverage at your property. that shows local signal strength. You can also check coverage on mobile providers’ websites.
If there isn’t a strong 4G or 5G signal indoors you can attach an external antenna to your property.
All the major mobile operators offer services and unlimited data packages are available. Follow the links below to visit mobile operators’ websites to compare tariffs and coverage:

Fixed wireless
Fixed wireless broadband uses an antenna to pick up a broadband signal from a mast to deliver broadband to your property, eliminating the need for cables or phone lines.
Where available fixed wireless is an option for those without access to a reliable fixed line broadband connection and should provide a consistent service. You will need a line of sight between the receiver on your property and the mast. Sometimes obstructions such as trees, foliage or manmade structures can interfere and block the signal.
Fixed wireless is available in some rural areas where there is not yet access to fibre broadband. You can talk to your neighbours, local broadband providers or where available your local authority broadband engagement officer to find out what might be available near you.
