Introduction
The main source of data used is the Wales National Workforce Reporting System (WNWRS) which has been supplied and validated by NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership.
Main points
On 31 December 2024, there were 1,579 full-time equivalent (FTE) fully qualified GPs providing health care from 370 general practices in Wales. The number of fully qualified GPs decreased by 9 (0.5%) and the number of general practices decreased by 4 (1.1%) from 31 December 2023.
When broken down by specific GP types
- 1,020 FTE GP partners, an annual decrease of 1%.
- 446 FTE salaried GPs, an annual increase of 13.8%.
- 102 FTE GP locums worked in the quarter, an annual decrease of 34.4% (see the quality report for information about changes to locum coverage from 31 March 2024).
- 12 FTE GP retainers, an annual increase of 1.
Alongside fully qualified GPs, there were
- 442 FTE GP registrars (trainee GPs), an annual increase of 8.1%.
- 1,017 FTE registered nurses, an annual decrease of 2.2%.
- 955 FTE direct patient care staff (staff who are not GPs or nurses but deliver health services to patients, such as health care assistants, dispensers and pharmacists), an annual decrease of 0.7%.
- 3,930 FTE administrative or other non-clinical practice staff, an annual decrease of 0.4%.
If a contract is not in place between the health board and a GP partner, the local health board can manage a general practice with staff which may include salaried GPs and GP locums.
On 31 December 2024 there were 19 local health board managed practices, an annual decrease of 6. These practices employed 60 FTE fully qualified GPs and 339 FTE wider practice staff. These staff are included in the total staff counts.
